Can ChatGPT Actually Build Your Business Website?
AI · Published
Yes, ChatGPT can produce a website, and for some businesses that is genuinely the right answer. It is also the wrong answer often enough, and for reasons specific enough, that it is worth knowing which side of the line you are on before you spend a month finding out. This is written by people who use these tools daily and who lose work to them, so read it with that in mind and check the reasoning rather than the conclusion.

What AI genuinely does well
Understating this would be dishonest and you would find out anyway. The current generation of tools is good at a real set of things:
- Producing a working single-page site from a description, in minutes, with layout, copy and placeholder imagery in place.
- First drafts of copy. Not finished copy, but a far better starting point than a blank page, which is where most small business sites stall for months.
- Standard components: contact forms, galleries, FAQ sections, pricing tables. Well-trodden patterns come out well because there are millions of examples of them.
- Explaining and fixing things you do not understand, which makes self-managing a simple site far more realistic than it was a few years ago.
- Getting something live. A mediocre site that exists outperforms an excellent one that is still being discussed.
If you are pre-revenue, testing an idea, or you need a page with your hours, your services and a phone number, generate it, put it live, and spend the money on getting customers instead. That is the correct call and we will tell you so on the phone.
Where it falls down on a real business site
The failures are not about the code looking bad. They are specific, and they tend to surface after launch, which is the expensive time to find them.
- It optimises for plausible, not correct. Generated copy states things about your business that sound right and are not: services you do not offer, hours you do not keep, guarantees you never made. On a service business, that is a customer complaint waiting to happen.
- Structured data and technical SEO come out generic or wrong. A LocalBusiness block with the wrong geography, or an FAQ block that does not match the visible page, does less than nothing.
- Integrations are where it stops. Connecting a booking system, a POS, a payment processor or a CRM involves credentials, webhooks, failure states and edge cases that a generated draft does not handle. This is most of the work on a real project.
- Performance drifts. Generated pages tend to carry heavy images and unnecessary libraries, and speed is both a ranking factor and the thing that loses mobile visitors.
- It does not know your market. It cannot tell you which Ottawa search terms are worth targeting, what the three competitors ranking above you are doing, or which neighbourhoods your customers actually come from.
- There is no one accountable. When the form silently stops delivering to your inbox, which is the single most common website failure we get called about, there is nobody who owns that.
The pattern across all of these is the same: AI is strong at producing a plausible starting point and weak at everything that requires knowing whether the result is true, fast, connected and yours.
Is web design still worth paying for in 2026?
For a brochure page with no integrations, decreasingly. That category is being absorbed by tools, and pretending otherwise would be selling.
For anything where the website has a job, it is worth more than it was, not less. When generating a passable site is nearly free, a passable site stops being a differentiator, and the advantage moves to the things generation does not cover: a distinct identity, correct technical foundations, working integrations, real local search visibility, and someone accountable when it breaks.
The useful question is not "can AI build this" but "what happens to this site in month six". If the answer involves bookings, payments, ranking against real competitors, or anything that must keep working while you run the business, that is the case for paying someone.
Will AI replace web designers and developers?
It has already replaced a category of work: the low-end template assembly that used to be sold as web design. That is not coming back, and the people who did only that are the ones feeling it.
What it has not replaced is the judgment layer, deciding what should be built, what the business actually needs, which trade-offs to take, and whether the output is correct. Generation is cheap; knowing whether the generated thing is right is not, and it is the part that requires having done it before.
The realistic shape of this is that the tools are now part of how the work is done rather than a replacement for it. We use them daily, for drafts, for boilerplate, for the parts that are the same on every project. That is a reason we can quote lower than an agency carrying an office and an account management layer, and it is the same reason we will tell you to generate it yourself when that is genuinely the better call.
How to decide, in four questions
Answer these honestly and the decision usually makes itself.
- Does the site need to do anything beyond informing? Bookings, payments, quotes, accounts, inventory. If yes, the integration work is the project and generation does not cover it.
- Do you need to rank against real competition? If customers find you by searching rather than by referral, technical SEO and local search work are the point of the site, not a feature of it.
- Who maintains it in six months? If the honest answer is nobody, a managed arrangement is cheaper than a site that quietly breaks.
- What does an hour of your time cost? Generating and maintaining a site yourself is not free; it is paid in the hours you are not running the business. For some owners that is a good trade and for others it is the most expensive option on the table.
If the answers point to generating it yourself, do that. If they point the other way, get a quote, and if you already have one from another agency, send it to us and we will match the scope and beat it in writing.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT actually create a website?
Yes, it can produce a working site from a description in minutes, and for a simple informational page that is often the right choice. What it does not reliably produce is correct claims about your business, sound technical SEO and structured data, working integrations with booking or payment systems, or anyone accountable when something breaks after launch.
Is AI replacing web developers?
It has replaced low-end template assembly, and that category is not coming back. It has not replaced the judgment layer: deciding what to build, choosing the trade-offs, handling the integrations, and knowing whether the generated output is actually correct. Most working developers now use these tools daily rather than competing with them.
Will AI replace web designers?
Not for work where the design has a job beyond looking acceptable. When a passable site costs almost nothing to generate, a passable site stops being a differentiator, and the value moves to a distinct identity, conversion decisions and technical foundations. The designers most affected are those whose offer was a lightly customised template.
Is web design still worth it in 2026?
For a brochure page with no integrations, less so every year. For any site that takes bookings or payments, has to rank against real local competition, or has to keep working while you run the business, it is worth more than it was, because the cheap part got cheaper and the hard part did not.
Is web design still in demand in 2026?
Demand has shifted rather than fallen. Businesses that need a static page increasingly generate it themselves, while demand has grown for integration work, local and AI search visibility, performance, and ongoing management. The work that disappeared was the part AI does well, which is exactly the part that used to be sold at the lowest prices.
Should I use AI to build my business website or hire someone?
Ask what the site has to do beyond informing, whether you need to rank against real competition, who maintains it in six months, and what an hour of your time is worth. If it is informational and you have time, generate it. If it takes bookings or payments or has to be found in search, get it built. We will tell you which on a free consultation, including when the answer is to do it yourself. Call (613) 800-8028.
