How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity
AI · Published
Being cited by an AI assistant is not one problem, it is three, and they have to be solved in order: the assistant has to be able to retrieve you, independent sources have to corroborate what you are, and the passage has to be liftable. Most businesses work on the third, which is the cheapest, and skip the first two, which are the ones that decide it.

Step one: be retrievable by the right index
Each assistant reaches the open web through a particular door, and the doors are different. Optimising only for Google leaves several of them shut.
- ChatGPT search, Copilot and DuckDuckGo: substantially Bing. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, and publish changes through IndexNow so new pages are picked up in hours rather than weeks.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google's index, but selected at passage level rather than page level, which rewards pages with clearly self-contained sections.
- Perplexity: its own crawl plus Bing, with a pronounced preference for recent content, structured lists and forum discussion.
- Claude and Gemini in chat: a mix of search and what the model already holds, which makes brand co-occurrence across many sources disproportionately important.
- All of them: make sure the crawler can read the page without running JavaScript. If your site renders client-side, prerender it or server-render it. This one issue silently disqualifies a great many otherwise well-built sites.
- Check robots.txt actually permits the assistant crawlers you want. Blocking them is a legitimate choice; blocking them by accident and then wondering why you are never cited is not.
Step two: build the corroboration
This is the part that takes months and the part that decides the outcome. A model deciding whether to name a business is, in effect, asking how confidently it can say what this business is. That confidence comes from repetition across sources that are not you.
- Describe yourself identically everywhere. One paragraph, one category, one phone format, on every directory, profile and listing. Variation reads as uncertainty.
- Get onto the platforms that already publish the lists assistants quote. For agencies that is Clutch, DesignRush and similar; every industry has its equivalents. Being on the list is what gets you into the answer that quotes the list.
- Accumulate reviews on platforms that verify them. Volume and recency both count.
- Earn genuine mentions: local press, industry publications, podcasts, expert quote services. A handful of real mentions outweighs hundreds of directory entries.
- Participate honestly where your customers discuss the problem. Perplexity and ChatGPT both surface community threads heavily, and being named by someone else in one of those is worth more than any page you can publish.
- Make sure your own site claims the association plainly. If you want to be named for a category, the category has to appear on your site in plain sentences, not only in a logo and a tagline.
Step three: write passages that can be lifted
A model quoting you needs a sentence that survives being removed from its page. That is a writing constraint, and it is a specific one.
- Put the answer in the first forty words under the heading. Not the context, not the throat-clearing, the answer.
- Make the heading the question, in the words a person would use.
- Write self-contained sentences. Name the subject rather than referring back to it, because a lifted sentence takes its pronouns with it and loses their referents.
- Use plain declaratives. Marketing phrasing gets rewritten or skipped, because a model has to rephrase a claim it cannot attribute.
- Include something concrete: a number, a date, a threshold, a named constraint. Concreteness is most of what makes a passage worth citing rather than paraphrasing.
- Put comparisons in tables. Tables get extracted more reliably than the same information in prose.
- Add a short key-facts block near the top of long pages. It is the single easiest thing for a model to lift accurately.
- Show the date, and make it true. A revision date on a page that has not changed is worse than no date at all once a reader checks.
What to do first if you do nothing else
In order, for a business starting from nothing: verify in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit the sitemap. Make sure your pages are readable without JavaScript. Write one consistent description of your business and put it on the ten most relevant profiles. Then rewrite the top five pages answer-first. That sequence costs very little and removes the reasons you are currently invisible.
Everything after that is accumulation: reviews, mentions, content, time.

Frequently asked questions
Why does ChatGPT not know my business exists?
Usually one of three things. Your site is not in Bing's index, so its search mode never retrieves you. Your site renders in the browser and the crawler saw an empty page. Or nothing outside your own website describes you as the thing being asked about, so there is no corroboration to draw on. Check them in that order; the first is often a twenty-minute fix.
Does blocking AI crawlers hurt me?
It removes you from the answers, which is the trade. Blocking is a legitimate choice for a business whose content is the product and is being reproduced rather than cited. For a local service business trying to be recommended, blocking the crawlers is closing the door you are trying to get through.
Is Reddit really that important?
For Perplexity and for ChatGPT it is disproportionately influential, because it is where genuine discussion of local recommendations happens and assistants treat it as such. The value is in being named by other people, which cannot be manufactured. Posting promotional threads about yourself is transparent, gets removed, and does not produce the signal.
How often should I update pages?
Substantively, when there is something to change, and at minimum a real review every six months for anything with a year in the title or a price in the body. Recency is a genuine ranking input for some assistants, and a page that has not been touched in three years is one they will pass over for one that has.
Can I check whether AI assistants are citing me?
Yes, by asking them, systematically. Keep a fixed list of the questions your customers would ask, run them on each assistant on the same schedule, and record whether you appear and what was cited. Results vary between runs, so read the trend over several weeks rather than any single answer.
