How Much Does SEO Cost in Ottawa?

Pricing · Published

SEO pricing is opaque in a way that suits the people selling it. This lays out the three models used in the Ottawa market, the ranges each sits in, what you should expect to be included, and — more usefully — how to work out whether the money is doing anything.

The three pricing models

Observed ranges for the Ottawa market in 2026. As with any range, a specific engagement can sit outside it for legitimate reasons.

  • Monthly retainer — roughly $750 to $5,000 a month. The standard model. Ongoing content, technical work, link building and reporting. Local-only campaigns for a single-location business sit at the lower end.
  • One-off project — roughly $2,000 to $10,000. A technical audit and fix, a site migration, or a local SEO setup. Sensible when you need a specific problem solved rather than continuous work.
  • Hourly consulting — roughly $100 to $250 an hour. Best when you have someone in-house who can execute and needs direction rather than delivery.

What should be included at each level

The word "SEO" covers work that ranges from genuinely technical to entirely cosmetic. At a local retainer you should expect, at minimum:

  • Google Business Profile management, including posts and review response
  • Ongoing citation building and cleanup
  • New page content targeting specific searches, agreed in advance
  • Technical maintenance — crawl errors, page speed, structured data
  • Monthly reporting that includes calls and form submissions, not only rankings

If a proposal at that price is only rank tracking and a monthly PDF, you are paying a retainer for reporting.

How to tell whether it is working

Rankings are a proxy. Leads are the thing. Insist that reporting includes all of these, and that you have direct access to the accounts rather than receiving screenshots:

  • Calls from the Google Business Profile, which the profile reports natively
  • Form submissions and phone clicks from the website, which requires conversion tracking to be configured — most sites do not have this, and without it no one can tell you whether SEO produced revenue
  • Organic sessions in Google Analytics, segmented to the local market
  • Impressions and clicks per query in Google Search Console, which is free and which you should have access to
  • Rankings for a named set of terms agreed at the start, so the target cannot move

Why cheap SEO is usually worse than no SEO

Below roughly $500 a month, the economics do not permit much beyond automated reporting — the hours are not there. The worst outcomes are not wasted money but active damage: bulk directory submissions to low-quality sites, spun content, and paid links, all of which are the categories Google's spam systems target.

Cleaning up a link profile after that is slower and more expensive than the SEO would have been. If the budget is genuinely small, the better spend is a one-off local SEO setup and then doing review collection yourself.

SEO or Google Ads?

For most Ottawa service businesses the answer is both, in a specific order. Ads produce calls within days and tell you which search terms actually convert. SEO takes months but compounds and does not stop when the budget does.

Starting with ads and feeding what you learn into the SEO plan is usually the more efficient sequence, because you are no longer guessing which terms are worth targeting.

Frequently asked questions

How much does local SEO cost for a small business in Ottawa?

A single-location local campaign typically runs $750 to $2,000 a month in Ottawa. Below about $500 a month there are not enough hours in the budget for meaningful work, and the risk of getting automated low-quality tactics instead rises sharply.

How long before SEO works?

Local terms usually show movement in two to four months. Competitive city-wide terms in trades, legal or medical take six to twelve. Anyone quoting faster is either describing ads or is not describing anything real.

Is SEO worth it for a small Ottawa business?

It depends entirely on whether your customers search for what you sell. A trades business where people search "plumber near me" has enormous upside. A business that gets all its work through referral and repeat custom may get more from ads or from nothing at all.

Can I do SEO myself?

The highest-value parts, yes. Claiming and completing your Google Business Profile properly, choosing the right primary category, and asking every happy customer for a review will get most small businesses further than a cheap retainer will.
